Kilolo Luckett

Founding Executive Director & Chief Curator

Kilolo Luckett is the Founding Executive Director + Chief Curator at Alma Lewis, an experimental, contemporary art platform for critical thinking, constructive dialogue, and creative expression dedicated to Black culture. 
 
With more than twenty-five years of experience in arts administration and cultural production, she is committed to elevating the voices of underrepresented visual artists, especially women, and Black and Brown artists.
 
Among her published works, Luckett is most proud of her recent 2023 exhibition publication, Stephen Towns: Declaration & Resistance. She is also writing an authorized biography on Naomi Sims, one of the first Black supermodels.

Q&A With Kilolo

What is your passion? 

KL:  My passion is to help create the scaffolding for artists to thrive.

At what age did you know you wanted to become a curator? 

KL:  Although I had an instinct for advocating for artists at a very young age, I didn’t know what a curator was until college; I was 21.

Favorite book: 

KL:  I’m a book nerd. So, a favorite book right now is, “Scattered and Fugitive Things:  How Black Collectors Created Archives and Remade History” by Laura E. Helton.

Proudest moment: 

KL: Creating a physical space for ALMA | LEWIS is a proud moment.

Favorite destination:

KL:  Cayman Islands —I need to be near water; feel the warmth of the sun; cuddle up with a book on the beach; and eat delicious food.
